Summary Statement

Reporting to the Production Manager, this position is responsible to oversee and direct the production operation with a focus on health and safety, quality and continuous improvement. The position will work collaboratively with the Production Manager to develop and execute plant procedures using lean principles and tools. Most importantly this position will lead, mentor and support a group of production employees and take a leadership role in all investigations, inspections, and audits. This position will work closely with all other departments, but especially with client care, materials and engineering to manage production scheduling to meet customer requirements.

 Major Duties and Responsibilities

Supervisory Duties

  • Oversees the flow of production within the plant and reports any barriers to flow. As well, takes responsibility in addressing the barriers by any means i.e. contacts temp. staffing agencies, encourages overtime work within the team etc.
  • Directs the Team Leads in achieving the production output goals for each shift by maintaining production planning.
  • Provides coaching to Team Leads including providing them with regular feedback.
  • Audits and ensures on-going recording of production hour by hour, reasons for misses, and responds.
  • Manages the execution of the rotation and labour planning processes, and other elements. (Takt in kanban areas means hitting designated replenishment times.)
  • Establishes, monitors adherence, maintains, and improves standardized work.
  • Ensures operators are trained and proficient at every job in the rotation pattern.
  • Manages a process for implementing operators suggestions for improvement.
  • Attends and fills in at daily startup meetings per protocol.
  • Ensures compliance with Health & Safety program and legislation.
  • Responsible for Health & Safety compliance of assembly personnel.
  • Maintains visual controls for processes and materials.
  • Assigns/supervises the work of production teams through the Team Leads to ensure proper work flow is maintained.
  • Plans/executes order distribution to ensure production schedule and shipment dates are achieved.
  • Supervises the training of new employees on procedures and equipment.
  • Ensures all supplies, raw materials, tools, fixtures and jigs are available for the efficient operation of the plant.
  • Supervises to ensure operator preventative maintenance (daily/weekly/monthly) is completed and signed off by the operators, based on the requirements of the visual TPM board in the work cell.
  • Ensures all plant equipment is serviced and maintained in good working condition.
  • Conducts performance reviews of production associates as well as maintains cross training and job rotation schedule.
  • Responsible for using progressive disciplinary system, where required; performs investigations and provides coaching, verbal & written warnings etc., when needed. Ensures all instances of disciplinary actions are recorded.
  • Assists with recruitment and contacts agencies regarding grants and incentives, as required.

Operational Duties

  • Reads and interprets technical drawings. Provides solutions and input, when required.
  • Plans, directs and coordinates quality control measures including product inspections, troubleshooting and reporting quality concerns.
  • Assists in rectifying identified quality issues.

Administrative and General Duties

  • Develops and maintains an efficient, current file and record management system both for electronic and paper correspondence and documents.
  • Ensures cell metric’s boards are updated and maintained.
  • Maintains complete knowledge of and complies with company policies, procedures and standards.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or vocational equivalent.
  • A minimum of 5 to 6 years experience in the manufacturing industry with a minimum of 2 years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience using a variety of tools including table saws, miter-saws, drill press, routers (ideal, but basic equipment to learn).
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel (for Production Reports).
