HR Generalist

Description

(12-14 Month Contract)

  • Be the subject matter expert on 11 collective agreements.
  • Maintain oversight of collective agreement documentation, and provide reports as requested.
  • Provide advice, support, and guidance regarding the administration, interpretation, and application of orgs collective agreements, and the handling of complaints and/or grievances; sit in on grievance meetings.
  • Assist in preparation for contract negotiations by conducting research, compiling information, and supporting with requests.
  • Act as back-up in negotiations as required.
  • Contribute to the fostering of active and constructive communications and working relationships between unions and management.
  • Maintain a thorough awareness of trends in employee and labour relations.
  • Provide advice, support, and guidance regarding a broad range of employee relations issues (non-union employees) and act as an internal consultant to managers.
  • Act as a subject matter expert regarding investigations, attendance, discipline, and terminations.
  • Provide guidance and support to the People & Culture team on questions related to human resource matters and legislative interpretation.
  • Proactively identify areas of opportunity to drive awareness of employee and labour relations processes and best practices.
  • Support in proactively monitoring, reviewing, and maintaining current HR policies and guidelines aligned with legislative requirements.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of a recruitment and retention plan for positions within the business unit.
  • Provide support to onboarding activities for new employees and provide guidance in completing new hire documents.
  • Advise supervisors and employees regarding employee programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist with employee engagement activities and projects.
  • Assist with special projects and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Minimum three years of generalist experience, with a focus on labour relations and employee relations.
  • Post-secondary degree, preferably in HR or Business Administration; CHRP or CHRL strongly recommended.
  • Experience with labour relations, arbitrations, mediations and labour meetings as well as strong understanding of interpreting, applying and administering collective agreements.
  • Strong relationship management, effective listening, communication skills and interpersonal skills across all levels with commitment to providing exceptional customer service.
  • Strong judgment and problem-solving skills, while mitigating risk to the organization.
  • Strong attention to detail, with the ability to multi-task and prioritize multiple initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Proactive and independent with the ability to take initiative.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work with confidential and sensitive material; ability to work with a high degree of accuracy, often in time-sensitive situations.
  • Proficiency in MS Office
  • Experience in the not-for-profit sector an asset
